MS in Information Systems
If you envision yourself as a key player in designing and developing software applications, a master’s in information systems is right for you.

NJIT's M.S. Information Systems program is finely balanced, focusing on both the technological and human-behavior elements of the computing environment. No aspect of the field goes unstudied: You'll explore the planning, investigation, design, development, application, management, and evaluation of information systems.

You'll be perpetually exposed to emerging concepts and technologies through NJIT's pioneering information systems research, and you'll find numerous opportunities to participate in ongoing projects in every area of the field.

NJIT's program includes six core courses, plus one of these elective tracks:

  • Research and pre-Ph.D.
  • Data management
  • Decision making and knowledge management
  • Electronic commerce
  • HCI—interaction design
  • HCI—communication design
  • Security
  • Network Management
  • Systems analysis and design
  • Software systems
  • Emergency management

You can choose to take the program with courses only, or complete a one-semester master's project or two-semester master's thesis. For full curriculum details, see the graduate catalog.

The M.S. in Information Systems can be applied toward NJIT's Ph.D. in Information Systems.

Who is this program recommended for?

The M.S. Information Systems program offers advanced preparation for anyone interested in systems analysis, software engineering, information and communication technologies, or management of information systems, in any number of industries.

Because information systems is broadly interdisciplinary, this program is suitable for students from any undergraduate background.

What will I gain?

In addition to an advanced degree from a nationally respected university, the M.S. Information Systems program will give you:

  • Hands-on experience in team research and in the industry
  • Interaction with information systems experts, including NJIT professors
  • On-the-job experience through co-ops arranged by NJIT (optional)
  • Access to facilities including research laboratories and state-of-the-art software and hardware
  • The ability to customize your program with one of the specializations mentioned above
  • The chance to focus on the topics you’re most interested in by choosing electives from NJIT’s extensive range of graduate courses
  • The choice to cap off your program with a thesis or project, or to take the “course only” option

To learn more about the possibilities, take a look at the graduate catalog or Contact Us.

Why study information systems through CPE?

CPE gives you options. In addition to taking courses at NJIT’s Newark campus, you can enroll in online courses and attend classes at one of our extension sites located throughout New Jersey. You’ll have access to the same outstanding facilities and professors as full-time NJIT students, plus the flexibility you need to juggle all the aspects of your life.

Admission Requirements

In addition to NJIT's general graduate admission guidelines, the M.S. Information Systems program requires the following:

Students must have a 2.8 or higher GPA in all prior academic work. If you don't meet this requirement but have significant work experience since obtaining your last degree, your application may be considered on an individual basis.

Students with degrees from outside the United States must submit GRE, GMAT, or MCAT scores.

Students must have a working knowledge of an object-oriented programming language, at least one year of calculus, one course in calculus-based probability and statistics, and one advanced mathematics courses (such as discrete analysis). If you don't have one or more of these requirements, you will be required to take bridge courses in programming, information systems technology, mathematics, and/or accounting, with a minimum 3.0 GPA. See the graduate catalog for full details.

International students with TOEFL scores lower than 213 may be required to take specific courses in spoken and written English.
