Certificate in Emergency Management
The emergency management graduate certificate focuses on how information systems are designed and used to keep businesses and organizations running smoothly during crises, as well as aspects of management related to those systems.

This certificate can also help you maintain your OSHA certifications: The elective course Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response satisfies 29 CFR 1910.120 for one year.

What will I learn?

In this program you’ll gain 12 credits that can be applied to NJIT M.S. Information Systems program, and learn:

  • How information systems support business continuity in emergency, disaster, and crisis situations, including the development of requirements and the design of human interaction
  • An overview of human and organizational behavior in the emergency environment
  • How the functionality of the system and the approach to the human interface are influenced
  • The components of the interactive and continuous emergency lifecycle (planning, mitigation, training, alerting, response, recovery, and assessment) and the relationships between systems serving those different phases
  • The needs for integration and coordination across the phases of the process
  • A fundamental theory of improvisation
  • A set of methodological tools useful for building theory or improving practice
  • How to apply the theory and tools in simulated emergency response scenarios

Prerequisites

NJIT's standard admission requirements apply to this graduate certificate. In addition, non-elective courses within the program require:

  • An undergraduate degree in management, engineering, computing, or a social science
  • The ability to implement a personal website, including coding in HTML
